In 2015, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters famously broke his leg onstage during a concert, and subsequently found his hobby. With his activities curtailed, he focused on learning the art of barbecue. As Grohl's culinary repertoire and his equipment expanded, he founded his one-man catering business, Backbeat BBQ. However, he picks and chooses who gets his barbecued meats, cooking for friends at parties or firefighters and refugees during the California wildfires.
Last Wednesday, Grohl took his barbecue equipment and meats to Hope the Mission's Trebek Center in Northridge, California, at about 3PM. He spent the next 24 hours cutting, smoking, and cooking ribs, brisket, pork butt, and more (with naps) during Southern California's unusual winter storm. By Thursday afternoon, he was ready to serve barbecue. Grohl handed out barbecue dinners to around 500 homeless people that evening. He also posed for pictures with fans. Hope the Missions' director of development Grace Ancheta talked to Today about the event.
Ancheta says Grohl told staffers at Hope the Mission he finds getting into the barbecue pit therapeutic after he comes offstage.
"Whenever he comes off of work or anything else, that’s what he wants to do," Ancheta says. "He wants to cook for people."
She continues: "And by the way — it was amazing. It’s the best barbecue we’ve had."
