Nothing tastes like late summer more than eating something deep fried on a stick as you walk around with thousands of people enjoying a state fair. It's become somewhat of a competition between states to come up with the most innovative, delicious, and fattening foods in combinations guaranteed to make headlines. Corn dogs and ice cream cones once reigned supreme at such fairs, because they were designed to be eaten with one hand while standing or walking. Over time, we also got candy apples, funnel cakes, deep-fried Oreos, and whole turkey legs to enhance our fair experience. But there are some drawbacks to eating your way through a state fair. It only happens once a year, you can't eat everything available, and those foods are expensive. But you can make them at home!
Delish is offering a compilation of 49 recipes for beloved state fair foods you can make at home, from the classics (corn dogs, funnel cakes, and pretzels) to the modern (yakitori and zeppole) to the truly bizarre (bacon pickle pizza and chocolate bacon skewers). You may have to invest in a deep fryer and lots of oil, but it will be worth it to relive state fair season in January.
