Making a Cake with Betty Crocker

Max Miller bakes a cake and tells us a story. This video is longer than usual, but you can select which parts you are interested in. The first five minutes will explain how to make the original Betty Crocker Pineapple Upside-Down Cake. Although I have always depended on my 1973 edition of The Betty Crocker Cookbook, I have never used this recipe, because I always just made pineapple cake the way my mother did. She used a cup of brown sugar, a whole stick of butter, and as many pineapple rings as I can get into a 9x13 pan (usually 12). People seem to think mine is special.

At the five minute mark, this videos witches to the 100-year history of Betty Crocker, who is a fictional character. However, it was a long time before anyone knew that. First, she gave cooking advice by mail. Then she moved to radio. But she will always be best known for her cookbook. Unless you use cake mix, because the name is pretty well known for that, too. -via Damn Interesting
